Glass veranda or another patio cover?
A glass veranda is a fixed patio roof: it stays in position when you want shelter and when you do not. A retractable awning folds away, while a louvred pergola changes the angle of its roof blades. The veranda vs pergola decision therefore starts with whether you want constant overhead cover or control over open sky. Clear glazing preserves a view upwards but still needs thought about summer shade. Consider the windows beneath the roof and the seating position outside. A veranda can remain open at the sides, with screens or glass considered separately.
An aluminium veranda fitted to your home
An aluminium veranda needs more than a width and a projection. The supporting wall, roof fall and ground beneath the posts all influence its layout. A lean to veranda follows the familiar arrangement of a higher fixing along the house and a lower front edge, carrying water towards the gutter. Door openings, upstairs windows and existing pipes can limit that geometry. A free-standing frame is another option where fixing to the building is unsuitable. The survey checks those relationships before the frame is specified, rather than assuming every rear elevation can take the same arrangement.
Preparing for veranda installation
Decide where furniture will go, how you will reach the garden and whether the patio surface is staying. Share photographs showing the full wall and ground, not only the doorway. Existing decking, steps or drainage can affect post positions and access for fitting. The installation programme depends on the agreed structure and any preparatory work; it is not just the time spent assembling the roof. Ask what needs to be ready before the fitting date and what the quotation includes. - How long does a glass veranda last?
- The aluminium frame and toughened glass are designed to stay serviceable for decades, which is why we back our installations with an up to 10 year warranty. The parts that need attention over time are the seals, the gutter and the fixings, and all three are checked at handover.
- Will a veranda make my kitchen darker?
- A clear toughened glass roof passes most of the daylight through, so the change is far smaller than people expect. Where a room is already north facing we usually specify clear glass rather than tinted or opal, and we can set the front beam higher to keep the sightline open.
- Can a veranda be fitted to a rendered or timber framed wall?
- Yes, but the fixing method changes. Rendered blockwork usually needs resin anchors and spreader plates, and a timber framed wall needs the load taken back to the studs or a free standing frame instead. The surveyor confirms which applies before we quote.
- Do I need planning permission for a veranda?
- Most domestic verandas sit within permitted development, but limits on height, boundary distance and site coverage apply, and conservation areas and listed buildings are treated differently. Confirm your own case with your local authority planning team before you order.
- What happens to rainwater?
- The roof falls to an integrated gutter in the front beam and discharges through a concealed downpipe inside one of the posts. On a patio that already sits proud of a drain we either connect into the existing run or take the water to a soakaway.
- How long does the installation itself take?
- A typical domestic veranda is installed in one to two days once the frame arrives, following a survey and a manufacturing period of a few weeks. Groundworks for a free standing structure add time before the frame goes up.
- How should I choose between a veranda and a pergola?
- Choose a glass veranda for fixed overhead glazing and a louvred pergola when you want to vary the roof opening. Both need a suitable frame and drainage; the useful comparison is the light, shade and ventilation you want beneath them.
