Shop Front Awnings

Shop Front Awnings and Canopies

Retractable awnings and fixed canopies for shops, cafes and high street premises, branded with your name and fitted by our own team.

A shop front awning does three jobs at once. It shades the window display so stock does not fade and customers can see in, it gives people somewhere dry to pause at the door, and it puts your name in front of everyone walking along the street. We supply and fit retractable shop awnings and fixed shop front canopies across Yorkshire and north Lincolnshire, working from our base in Thorne. Every job starts with a free survey of the frontage, because the brackets, fascia, signage and pavement decide what will fit far more than a catalogue size does.

Retractable awning or fixed canopy

A retractable shop awning extends when you want shade or shelter and winds back against the fascia when you do not, so the frontage stays clear on dull days and the fabric is protected in bad weather. Electric models come with a remote and can be fitted with wind, rain and sun sensors so the awning looks after itself during a busy day. A fixed shop front canopy stays in place all year, giving permanent cover over a doorway, a window display or a queue. Shops that mainly want summer shade and branding usually choose an awning; premises that want dependable cover over an entrance every day choose a canopy. We fit both and will tell you which suits your frontage.

Branding that works from across the street

The valance along the front edge of an awning is the most visible piece of signage many shops have. It can be printed with your name, logo or strapline and stays readable whether the awning is fully out or only partly extended. Fabric comes in hundreds of plain and striped colours from leading European mills, UV stabilised and water repellent, so it can match your shopfront paint and existing signs. Frame colours can be chosen to suit the building too.

What we check on survey

Shop fronts vary more than house walls. We look at what the brackets can be fixed into, whether there is an existing sign box or old awning to remove, the height from pavement to fascia, how far the awning can project without affecting pedestrians, and where power can be brought for an electric model. We also check for downpipes, alarm boxes, CCTV and shutters that the awning has to clear. The written quote lists the specification so you can compare it fairly with others.

Permissions and conservation areas

Awnings and signs on commercial buildings can need planning permission or advertisement consent, and conservation areas and listed buildings have their own rules. We cannot promise the outcome of an application, but we can provide drawings and product details for your enquiry to the council. It is worth asking early, before fabric and branding are ordered.

Looking after a shop awning

Shop awnings live beside a road, so the fabric collects traffic dust and the odd bird dropping. A soft brush and plain water every few months keeps the colour and branding clean, and the fabric should be dry before it is retracted for any length of time so mildew cannot form. If it has to be closed wet at the end of a day, extend it again to dry on the next fine morning. Retract it in strong wind, or fit a wind sensor so it retracts itself.

Fitting around trading

Our own fitters install shop awnings, and we plan the date and time around your opening hours and deliveries so disruption is kept to a minimum. At handover we show you and your staff how to operate the awning, when to retract it, and how to look after the fabric so it keeps looking sharp.

Frequently asked questions

Should a shop have an awning or a fixed canopy?
An awning retracts, so the frontage stays clear and it can be put away in bad weather. A fixed canopy stays up permanently and gives constant cover over the doorway or window display. We explain both on survey.
Can the awning carry our shop name?
Yes. A printed valance along the front edge is the usual place for the name or logo, and it stays visible even when the awning is only partly extended.
Do I need permission for a shop awning?
Awnings and signs on commercial buildings can need planning or advertisement consent, and conservation areas have their own rules. Check with your council early; we can supply drawings and specifications for the enquiry.
Can you fit outside trading hours?
We plan fitting around your opening times so the shop is disrupted as little as possible.
What warranty do shop awnings carry?
Our awning range carries a warranty of up to 10 years, as stated across the site.
