Outdoor Classrooms and Forest School Areas
A covered teaching space needs shelter from rain and wind on the prevailing side, not just a roof. We look at the orientation of the space, whether side screens are needed, and how the ground surface drains before specifying anything.

We plan deliveries, exclusion zones and working hours around the school day. Fitters are DBS checked, work to a site specific RAMS document, and sign in and out through your normal safeguarding procedure.

- How do schools usually buy a canopy?
- Most schools work to a written specification and a set of comparable quotations, signed off by the business manager and governors or the trust. We supply drawings, a specification and a fixed price quotation in a form that fits that process.
- Can the work be done in the holidays?
- That is what we plan for. Manufacture takes several weeks, so the practical question is when the order is placed rather than when the holiday falls. Book the survey a term ahead and a summer or Easter installation is straightforward.
- What happens if the work has to run in term time?
- We fence and hoard the work area, agree a delivery and access route away from pupil movement, and time noisy operations around the school day. The site is left safe and clear at the end of every shift.
- Are your fitters DBS checked?
- Fitters working on school and nursery sites are DBS checked, and we supply job specific risk assessments and method statements before the first visit. We follow the school's own safeguarding and signing in arrangements while on site.
- What safety details matter on a school canopy?
- Finger safe and anti trap detailing, no sharp or low level projections, fixings out of reach, fire retardant fabric where specified, and drainage taken away from walkways so a shaded area does not create a slip risk.
- How big can an outdoor learning canopy be?
- That depends on span, fixing and wind exposure rather than an off the shelf size. Large playground and dining canopies are engineered to the wind load for the site, and the structural calculation is part of what we supply with the quotation.
