Verandas for Bungalows: Working with Low Eaves
Bungalows give you the best garden relationship and the worst headroom. The design question is always the same: where do you fix when the gutter is barely above the door?
The height problem
A roof needs fall to shed water. On a low eaves line there may not be room for a conventional wall plate above the gutter, which is where design work starts.
Fascia and soffit fixings
Purpose-made brackets can pick up above or through the fascia into the rafter feet, provided the timber is sound. That is checked at survey rather than assumed.
Low-pitch systems
Some systems are engineered for shallow falls specifically for this situation, which preserves headroom under the front beam.
Free-standing as the clean answer
Standing the structure just off the house sidesteps the eaves entirely and often looks better on a low elevation.

Will it make the room behind dark?
A glass roof keeps most of the light. On bungalows we usually recommend clear rather than opal glazing for this reason.
Can the gutter be moved?
Sometimes, though it is often simpler to design around it.
Is headroom under the front beam a problem?
It is the measurement to watch. We set it out on site so you can stand under it before committing.
Do bungalow installs cost more?
Not inherently, though bespoke fixing brackets can add a little.
