When Your Motor Stops to Cool Down

It can be alarming when your awning stops half-way through retracting and refuses to move again. In most cases, this isn't a broken motor but the 'thermal cut-out' in action. This safety feature shuts the motor down if the internal windings get too hot, protecting the electronics from permanent damage.
Safety first: isolate power before touching a motorised system, and never work at height off a ladder alone. If in doubt, book a fitter rather than forcing a mechanism.
What triggers the cut-out?
Thermal cut-out is usually triggered by repetitive use—opening and closing the awning several times in a row—or by the motor struggling against an obstruction. In high summer, the heat from the sun on the cassette can also bring the motor closer to its limit before you even turn it on.
The cooling period
Depending on the ambient temperature, a motor can take anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes to cool down enough to reset the internal switch. During this time, the remote will have no effect.

When it's not just heat

Excessive resistance, uneven arm tension, or a scraping sound indicates mechanical drag that is forcing the motor to work harder than it should, which is the most common underlying cause of repeated cut-outs.

Does an awning left half-open in a cut-out risk damage overnight?
A brief pause is not usually damaging, but leaving fabric partially exposed overnight increases the risk of dew, dust, or unexpected wind catching it, so it is worth waiting for the cool-down period and fully closing or opening it rather than leaving it half-way for an extended time.
Will running the awning less often make the motor last longer?
Reducing unnecessary operation, such as repeatedly opening and closing within a short space of time, does reduce cumulative thermal stress on the motor windings, so moderate, purposeful use rather than frequent 'testing' will generally support a longer working life.
Can a hotter than normal remote or wall switch indicate a fault?
A control unit itself getting warm is unusual and separate from the motor's own thermal cut-out; if the switch or remote housing feels hot to the touch, this is worth reporting alongside any cut-out symptoms as it may point to a wiring issue.
Ambient heat and cassette design
Awnings with a fully enclosed cassette trap more heat around the motor tube than open designs, meaning the same motor can run noticeably hotter on a still, sunny afternoon than on a cooler or breezier day. If cut-outs only happen during heatwaves, this is a normal limitation of the design rather than a fault to be fixed.
