Measure your tallest vehicle including roof bars or a box, then allow working clearance above it. Roof pitch eats into that figure at the low end.
Post positions and door swings
Posts must clear fully opened car doors on both sides and any pedestrian route past the vehicle. This usually sets the width rather than the drive does.
Drainage on a driveway
Driveways often fall towards the house or the garage. Concealed downpipes need a discharge point that does not create ice at the door in winter.
EV charging and lighting
If a charge point is fitted or planned, agree cable routes at survey. Integrated lighting makes the space far more usable in dark months.
