Managing Moisture on the Underside of Your Roof

Condensation is a natural phenomenon that occurs when warm, moist air meets a cold surface. In a glass veranda or glass room, this often manifests as droplets on the underside of the roof glazing during autumn and winter mornings. While it is rarely a sign of a leak, it can be an annoyance. Understanding the physics of airflow and dew points allows you to manage the environment and keep your roof clear.

The science of the dew point

Condensation happens when the glass surface temperature drops below the dew point of the air underneath it. In an unheated veranda, the glass cools rapidly overnight. If the air is humid—perhaps from damp patio slabs or plants—water will inevitably form on the cold glass surface as the air cools.

Ventilation as the primary cure

Managing the floor surface

Many people don't realise that their patio material contributes to roof condensation. Porous stone or damp decking can hold a lot of water, which evaporates upwards as the sun hits it, then condenses on the roof. Ensuring your floor has good drainage and is kept dry can significantly reduce the moisture load in the air.

Heating and thermal breaks

Deciding between the two: common questions

Is a dripping roof always a leak?

Not necessarily. If the water is forming evenly across the surface rather than at a specific joint, it is almost certainly condensation rather than an ingress of rainwater.

Will a dehumidifier help?

In a fully enclosed glass room, a dehumidifier can be very effective at removing the excess moisture that causes condensation.

Does self-cleaning glass stop condensation?

The self-cleaning coating is on the outside, so it has no effect on condensation forming on the inside face of the glass.

Can I wipe the condensation off?

Yes, using a soft microfibre cloth on a telescopic pole is a safe way to clear the glass, but addressing the ventilation is a better long-term fix.
