
A Structure That's Drifted Out of Level
A structure that was level when fitted but now shows a visible lean or an uneven roofline hasn't necessarily failed — ground movement, post base settlement, and seasonal soil changes can all shift a structure gradually over years.
Safety first: isolate power before touching a motorised system, and never work at height off a ladder alone. If in doubt, book a fitter rather than forcing a mechanism.
Ground and foundation movement
Post bases set on inadequate foundations, or on ground that wasn't fully compacted before paving, can settle unevenly over time, particularly where one post sits on made-up ground and another on more established, undisturbed soil nearby.
Seasonal soil movement
Clay-rich soils in particular expand and contract with moisture content through the year, and in periods of prolonged dry weather can shrink enough to cause minor seasonal movement in shallow foundations — this can partially self-correct with the seasons or gradually worsen depending on the ground.
How to check for level drift
Use a spirit level along the roofline or a beam at a few points rather than relying on the eye alone, since a gradual lean over several metres can be surprisingly hard to spot visually even when it's measurably present.

When it matters versus when it's minor
A very slight, long-standing lean that hasn't changed in years is less concerning than a lean that's clearly progressing, or one accompanied by cracking at a post base or wall junction, which suggests active rather than historic movement.

Does this mean the original installation was done badly?
Not necessarily — ground conditions can change after installation in ways that weren't foreseeable, particularly with soil type and drainage changes nearby, so drift doesn't automatically indicate a fitting fault.
Is a slightly out-of-level structure unsafe?
A minor, stable lean is unlikely to be an immediate safety issue, but ongoing or worsening movement should be assessed, since it can eventually affect fixings and glazing seating if left unaddressed.
Can this be corrected without dismantling the whole structure?
Often yes, particularly if adjustable post bases were used originally, though the extent of correction possible depends on how much the structure has moved and how it was originally founded.
Will fixing it stop it happening again?
It depends on the underlying cause — addressing a genuinely inadequate foundation should prevent recurrence, while normal seasonal soil movement may need periodic minor re-levelling over the years.

A fitter will establish which post or posts have moved, check the foundation at that point, and depending on findings may re-shim, re-level via adjustable post bases if fitted, or in more significant cases address the foundation itself before re-levelling the frame above it.
