When Parts of Your Integrated LEDs Fail

Integrated LED strips provide a seamless glow under your awning, but because they are wired in series or segments, a single fault can knock out an entire section. This is rarely a 'blown bulb' and more often a connection failure or moisture ingress within the housing.

Circuit segment failure

Modern strips are made of small modules. If one solder joint or chip fails due to thermal expansion, it breaks the circuit for that entire segment. This leaves a dark patch while the rest of the awning remains lit.

Moisture and corrosion

Although the strips are sealed, the end-caps where the wires enter can eventually allow damp air in. This leads to corrosion on the copper tracks, which increases resistance and eventually kills the light.

  • Inspect the driver (power supply) box
  • Verify other electrical functions

Technician diagnostics

A technician will measure the voltage at the start of the dead section. If power is reaching it but not passing through, the strip itself needs to be carefully extracted from the aluminium profile and replaced.

The role of the LED driver

If the entire run is dead, the fault likely lies with the LED driver or the transformer. These components convert mains power to the low voltage the LEDs require and are a common point of failure after several years.

Ruling out the transformer first

Before condemning a strip, isolate the driver and test it with a multimeter set to DC voltage at its output terminals. A driver producing no voltage, or a voltage far below what the strip expects, is the actual fault, and replacing a small driver box is far simpler and cheaper than replacing an embedded strip.

Colour shift near a failing section

Sometimes a section doesn't go fully dark but instead turns a slightly different colour temperature to the rest of the run. Can I cut and join the strip myself?

No, integrated strips are factory-sealed to maintain their IP rating; DIY splices will almost certainly lead to water damage.

Are individual LEDs replaceable?

No, the entire strip or a large segment of it must be replaced as a sealed unit.

Can I test the strip myself before booking a repair?

You can safely check whether the driver is powered by looking for a small indicator light on the box, but testing voltage at the strip itself requires the cassette to be opened and is best left to a technician to avoid damaging the connectors.

Does a dead section affect the rest of the lighting?

Usually not; strips are wired in parallel-fed segments, so one dark section does not typically dim or affect the brightness of the working sections elsewhere on the same run.

How long do integrated LED strips usually last before this happens?

Quality strips run for many years of typical seasonal use, but heat inside a closed cassette in direct summer sun can shorten the life of individual segments compared with open-air LED fittings.
