Fixing Grades That Actually Cope With Salt Air

Salt-laden air travelling in off the Yorkshire coast and up the Humber estuary is genuinely harder on exposed metalwork than an inland garden in Wakefield or Harrogate, and fixings are usually the first thing to show it. Choosing the right stainless grade at the outset is far cheaper than replacing corroded fixings a few years in.

Why fixings corrode before the frame does

Aluminium frames are protected by their powder coat or anodised layer, but fixings are small, often partially exposed at the head, and made from a different metal entirely. In salt-heavy air, an inadequately specified fixing can develop surface rust or staining long before the surrounding frame shows any wear.

Grade 304 versus grade 316 stainless

Grade 304 stainless is a perfectly good general-purpose fixing for most inland UK gardens, but it has lower resistance to chloride exposure than grade 316, which includes molybdenum specifically to improve resistance in marine and coastal environments. For properties within a few miles of the coast or the Humber estuary, 316 is the safer specification.

Galvanic corrosion between mixed metals

Mixing incompatible metals, such as certain steel fixings directly against aluminium, can set up galvanic corrosion where one metal degrades faster in the presence of the other, especially with moisture present. Using isolating washers or compatible fixing materials avoids this altogether.

Signs a fixing is the wrong grade

Brown or orange staining running down from a bolt head or screw, sometimes called tea staining, is a common early sign that a fixing isn't coping with its environment, even when it's technically labelled stainless. It's worth pointing this out early rather than waiting for it to worsen.

Asking your installer the right question

Rather than asking generally whether fixings are stainless, ask specifically which grade is specified and whether it accounts for your property's distance from the coast. A specific answer here is a reasonable indicator of how carefully the rest of the job has been thought through.

Common questions

Do I need grade 316 stainless if I live in Doncaster or Leeds?

Not usually — inland locations away from significant salt exposure are generally well served by standard grade 304 fixings.

Can tea staining be cleaned off?

Light surface staining can sometimes be cleaned, but it tends to recur if the underlying fixing grade isn't suited to the exposure, so addressing the cause matters more than the cleaning.

Does the frame itself need special treatment near the coast?

The powder coat or anodised layer already offers good protection; the main additional consideration near the coast is fixing grade and sealing any cut edges.

Is 316 stainless much more expensive than 304?

There's a modest cost difference, but it's a small proportion of an overall project cost and a sensible investment for genuinely coastal or estuary-exposed properties.
