Most people choosing a veranda look at the colour chart before they look at what the metal underneath is actually made of. The alloy grade and the powder coat process behind that colour decide how the frame ages over the next twenty years, especially across exposed Yorkshire gardens from the Pennine edge to the Humber estuary.
Why 6000-series alloy turns up so often
Structural aluminium extrusions for verandas and glass rooms are almost always drawn from a 6000-series alloy, chosen because it takes a good extrusion, holds a screw thread reasonably well and resists corrosion without extra plating. It is not the only alloy that could do the job, but it is the one that balances strength, weight and machinability for post and beam sections.
Pre-treatment before the colour goes on
A powder coat is only as good as the surface it is bonded to. Aluminium should be degreased and chemically pre-treated, usually with a chrome-free conversion coating, before the polyester powder is applied electrostatically and cured in an oven. Skipping or rushing that stage is the most common cause of premature peeling.
Film thickness and why it is rarely quoted
Coating thickness is measured in microns, and a consistent 60-plus micron film resists stone chips and UV breakdown far better than a thin dusting. Ask your supplier what thickness they specify rather than assuming every powder coat is equal, because the figure is not always given voluntarily.

Where corrosion actually starts
Aluminium itself does not rust, but cut edges, drilled holes and scratches through the coating expose bare metal that can pit over time, particularly with salt-laden air near the Yorkshire coast. Sealing cut ends and using compatible fixings during installation matters as much as the coating itself.
Reading a written specification
A proper spec sheet will name the alloy series, the pre-treatment process and an approximate coating thickness rather than just a RAL number and a warranty length. If a quote only mentions the colour, it is worth asking the supplier to confirm the rest in writing before you commit.
Common questions
Does a thicker powder coat always mean better protection?
Generally yes within reason, but consistency matters more than raw thickness. An even 60-micron coat with good pre-treatment outperforms an uneven, thicker one with weak adhesion underneath.
Can I get any RAL colour on any aluminium grade?
Colour and alloy are largely independent — the powder coat sits on top of the extrusion. What varies is how well different suppliers control the pre-treatment and cure stages regardless of colour chosen.
Will coastal air near Hull or Grimsby affect my frame faster?
Salt-laden air accelerates corrosion at any exposed bare metal, so cut edges and fixing points need proper sealing in coastal areas. The bulk coated surface itself is largely unaffected.
Is anodising better than powder coating for durability?
