Anodising or Powder Coat — What's the Real Difference?

Anodising and powder coating both protect aluminium, but they are fundamentally different processes with different strengths, and the choice affects how easily a scratch can be touched up years down the line. Here is how the two compare for a domestic veranda or glass room frame.

How each process actually works

Anodising uses an electrochemical bath to thicken the aluminium's own natural oxide layer, so the finish becomes part of the metal itself. Powder coating instead bonds a separate polyester film to the surface. That single difference explains most of the practical trade-offs between them.

Colour range and consistency

Powder coating offers an enormous RAL colour range with consistent, opaque colour every time. Anodising is limited to a narrower palette of metallic tones, and colour can vary slightly batch to batch because it depends on the alloy's own composition reacting in the bath.

Repairing damage on site

A powder-coated frame can usually be touched up with matched touch-up paint if it gets chipped on delivery or during installation. Anodised finishes are much harder to repair invisibly on site because the colour comes from the metal reacting chemically, not from an applied layer.

Longevity in exposed locations

Both finishes perform well for decades when properly applied, but anodising is generally considered the more abrasion-resistant of the two because the protective layer is fused into the metal rather than sitting on top of it. For most domestic verandas the difference is rarely the deciding factor.

What most homeowners actually choose

The overwhelming majority of veranda and glass room frames sold in the UK are powder coated simply because customers want anthracite grey, white or a bespoke RAL colour, none of which anodising can reliably deliver. Anodising tends to appear on more architectural or commercial specifications.

Is anodised aluminium more expensive?

It can be, depending on the alloy and the anodising grade specified, though the price difference is often smaller than people expect for standard finishes.

Can anodised aluminium be repainted later?

It is possible with the right preparation, but it is a specialist job rather than a simple touch-up, unlike powder coat which usually accepts matched touch-up paint directly.

Which finish is better near the coast?

Both perform well in coastal exposure when the alloy and process are good quality, though ensuring cut edges and fixings are properly sealed matters more than the finish type itself.

Does powder coat fade faster than anodising?

Quality polyester powder coats are formulated to resist UV fade for many years, though very dark colours can show fade slightly sooner than anodised metallic tones in strong, prolonged sun.
