Rain on my polycarbonate roof is deafening, can it be quietened?

Nobody complains about a polycarbonate roof until the first proper downpour. The material is light, thin walled and hollow, which is exactly what makes it cheap to fit and exactly what makes it sound like a drum kit. Some of the noise can be reduced without replacing anything, but it is worth knowing which changes make a real difference and which are wasted money.

Why the noise is so much louder than you expected

Sound from rain is impact energy. A heavy, dense surface absorbs it, and a light one passes it on. Multiwall polycarbonate weighs a fraction of glass and contains sealed air channels, so each raindrop sets a thin skin vibrating over a resonant cavity. The larger the unbroken span of panel, the more freely it vibrates, which is why a wide carport roof is worse than a narrow porch even with identical sheets.

Check for the rattle before you tackle the drumming

There are usually two noises happening at once. The drumming is the panel itself, but the sharper rattle or click is loose hardware, and that part is fixable in an afternoon. Glazing bar caps that have lifted, retaining clips that have relaxed, and end closures that have popped off all let the sheet move independently of the frame. Walk the underside on a dry day and press gently upward on each panel near the bars, any movement you can feel is movement rain can excite.

What genuinely reduces the noise

Closing gaps and restoring the gaskets removes the rattle and takes the edge off. Beyond that, the honest position is that you are trying to change the acoustic behaviour of a lightweight sheet, and there is a limit. Thicker multiwall with more internal walls is measurably better than thin twinwall, but it is still polycarbonate. Anything sold as a stick on damping strip should be treated with caution, because unless it adds real mass across the whole panel it changes very little.

How glass compares if you are replacing anyway

Toughened or laminated glass is many times heavier than the polycarbonate it replaces, and mass is what absorbs impact. People who make the change usually describe rain as becoming a background sound rather than an event. Laminated glass adds an interlayer between two panes, which damps vibration further and is the quietest option we fit. A roof frame designed for polycarbonate cannot simply be reglazed with glass, because the loads are entirely different, so this is a structure conversation rather than a panel swap.

Changing from polycarbonate to glass is a structural change, not a swap. The frame, bars and fixings all have to suit the extra weight.

What to do first if you are living with it

Deal with the gutter and the fixings, because both are free or cheap and both remove the worst of the sharp noise. If the roof is over a room you use in the evening, be realistic about the remaining drumming and plan for a replacement in your own time rather than spending steadily on partial measures. Why is my polycarbonate roof so much louder than my neighbour's?

Span, sheet thickness and fixing condition all matter. A wide unbroken run of thin twinwall with relaxed clips will be far louder than a narrow run of thick multiwall fixed tightly.

Do rain noise reduction strips work?

In our experience the improvement is small. They do not add enough mass across the panel to change how it resonates, so the drumming largely remains.

Is glass much quieter than polycarbonate in rain?

Yes, noticeably so. Glass is far heavier, so it absorbs the impact instead of transmitting it, and laminated glass is quieter again because of the interlayer.

Can you fit glass into my existing polycarbonate roof?

Not into a frame built for polycarbonate. Glass weighs several times more, so the structure, bars and fixings have to be specified for it, which means a new roof structure.

Does a dirty roof make the noise worse?

Not directly, but a blocked gutter certainly does, because overflowing water lands back on the sheet edge and adds a splashing noise on top of the drumming.
