How a pergola awning is built

The frame is a set of aluminium posts and beams, fixed to the house along one side or freestanding on four or more posts. Guide rails run along the sides, and the fabric roof travels in those rails, driven by a motor. When it is closed the fabric sits rolled or folded at one end, leaving an open frame. When it is out, the fabric is held along both edges, so it stays taut and does not flap the way an arm awning can.

Pergola awning versus a wall awning

A wall awning is supported only at the wall and by its folding arms, so its size and wind resistance are limited by what the arms and brackets can carry. A pergola awning passes the load down through posts to the ground, which means larger areas can be covered and the roof can stay out in conditions where an arm awning would be brought in. The trade off is that the posts are permanent, and the frame is there all year even with the fabric retracted.

Pergola awning versus a louvred roof

A louvred pergola has aluminium blades that rotate to let air and light through or close to keep rain out. A pergola awning uses fabric that retracts completely, so you can have full open sky when you want it. Where pergola awnings work well

They suit patios that are too deep for an arm awning to reach, gardens where the seating is away from the house, and hospitality terraces where tables need cover across a wide area. Side screens can be added to the posts to block low sun or wind, and LED lighting and heaters can be fitted into the frame for evenings.

Rain and wind

A pitched fabric roof on a pergola frame is designed to let rain run off to the front, where a gutter can collect it on some systems. That makes it far more useful in a Yorkshire summer than a flat sun awning. In strong wind the fabric should still be retracted, and a wind sensor can do that automatically. Snow is a different matter: fabric roofs should be closed in winter, and if you want year round cover a glass veranda or louvred roof is the better fit.

Fixing and foundations

Because the posts carry the load, the ground under them matters. Posts usually sit on base plates bolted to a sound slab or on their own concrete footings. On the house side, a wall fixed version needs a sound wall at the right height. We check both on survey, along with drainage, so water leaving the roof does not end up where people sit.
