Commercial awnings: a practical buying guide for businesses
A commercial awning is a retractable fabric awning fitted to a business premises to shade a window display, shelter customers at the door or turn an outside terrace into usable seating. It works the same way as a home awning, but it is usually wider, used every day and often carries the business name. The main things that decide the design and cost are the width and projection, the wall it fixes to, whether it is manual or electric, any branding, and whether planning or landlord consent is needed.
What businesses use awnings for
The reasons are usually commercial rather than cosmetic, and knowing which one matters most helps shape the awning.
- Protecting window displays and stock from strong sun
- Keeping customers dry at the door while they queue or wait
- Making outdoor tables usable in sun and light showers
- Giving the front a clear, branded presence on the street
- Keeping glass fronted rooms cooler inside
What drives the cost
We do not publish prices because two awnings of the same width can be very different jobs. Width and projection set the size of the frame and fabric. The wall decides the fixing: sound masonry is straightforward, while shop fronts with fascia boards, cladding or glazing above need more planning. Electric operation adds a motor and a power supply. Branding adds printing or lettering to the fabric or valance. Access matters too, especially on a busy street where the pavement has to stay safe while we work.
Manual or electric for a business
An awning that is a nuisance to put out tends to stay in. For a cafe or pub terrace used every day, an electric motor with a remote or switch is usually worth it, because staff can open and close it in seconds and bring it in quickly if the weather turns. For a small shop awning used mostly on sunny days, a manual winding handle can be enough.
Branding and appearance
Many businesses want their name on the awning, usually on the front valance where it is read from the street. Fabric colour can be chosen to suit a brand, and frames come in standard or RAL colours to match shop fronts. Keep lettering simple and large enough to read from across the road; small detail tends to get lost.

Planning and landlord consent
Whether an awning on commercial premises needs planning permission or advertisement consent depends on the building, its location and what is printed on it, and conservation areas and listed buildings have extra rules. On leased premises the landlord's written consent is often needed too. We check these points on survey rather than assume, and it is worth raising with your landlord early so it does not hold up the job.
Fitting around trading
Most businesses cannot close for a day. We plan the install around your trading hours and deliveries, and keep the pavement or entrance safe while work goes on. Our own fitters carry out the install, so the people who surveyed the job are the people on site.
What to have ready for the survey
A few details make the first visit more useful and the quote more accurate.
- What you mainly want the awning to do
- Whether you lease the building and who the landlord is
- Any branding artwork or logo files
- Where a power supply could come from for a motor
- Times when the front must stay clear
Questions people ask us about this
How much does a commercial awning cost?
It depends on size, the wall it fixes to, manual or electric operation, branding and access. We give a written quote after a free survey rather than a guide price.
Can you print our logo on the awning?
Branding is commonly added to the front valance or fabric. Bring your artwork to the survey and we will talk through what works.
Does a shop awning need planning permission?
Sometimes. It depends on the building, the location and any advertising on it. We check this on survey, and landlord consent may also be needed.
Can you fit without us closing?
We plan the install around trading hours and keep the front safe while we work.
