Carport or garage: which one is worth the money on your drive?
These two products get compared as if they do the same job cheaply or expensively. They do not. A garage is a building that happens to hold a car, and a carport is weather cover for a parking space. Once you decide whether you need a room or a roof, the price difference stops being the main question.
Buy a garage if you need a room
Storage, a workshop bench, bikes, garden machinery and lockable security are things a carport cannot provide at any price. If half your reason for building is somewhere to put things, this is not a close call, and a carport will annoy you within a month.
Buy a carport if you need a roof
If the car lives on the drive and the only complaints are scraping ice, sap from the tree and a soaked back seat while you load shopping, a carport solves all of it for a fraction of the cost and in a fraction of the time. It is also easier to place, needs no foundations to a garage standard, and does not shrink the drive with door swing.
The damp point people get wrong
An open carport ventilates constantly, so a wet car dries. A poorly ventilated garage can hold moisture around a warm car and is not always the kinder environment for bodywork, especially older vehicles. A garage is better protection against everything except still, damp air, and that is a real caveat rather than a debating point.

Everyday convenience
Nobody puts their car in the garage when they are back for twenty minutes, and plenty of garages end up full of everything except a car. A carport gets used every single time, because using it takes no effort at all. If honest use is the measure, the cheaper product often wins on value.
The middle option
A carport with a solid roof and one or two enclosed sides gives shelter from driving rain and some screening, without becoming a building. It is a useful compromise on exposed plots and costs meaningfully less than a garage while feeling far more substantial than an open canopy.

Yes, an overhead cover largely prevents windscreen frost, which is the benefit most owners notice first.
Does a carport add value like a garage does?
A garage is a building and is treated as such. A carport is a useful improvement, and we would not put a figure on either because that is for a valuer to say.
Can a carport be added in front of an existing garage?
Often yes, giving a second covered space and a dry route to the garage door, subject to planning where it sits forward of the house.
How long does a carport take to install?
Typically a couple of days once bases are prepared, against weeks for a garage build.
