Awnings

Balcony Awnings for Flats and Upper Floors

Compact awnings that bring shade and privacy to a balcony, sized to the space and fixed for the height.

A balcony in full sun can be too hot to sit on for much of the summer, and an overlooked one never quite feels private. A well-chosen awning fixes both. Infinity Verandas supplies and installs balcony awnings for flats, maisonettes and upper-floor terraces across Yorkshire and north Lincolnshire. Balconies ask more of an awning than a patio does: the space is tighter, the wind is stronger and the fixing has to suit the building. That is why every project starts with a free survey rather than a guess.

Compact awnings for tight spaces

A balcony rarely has room for a full-size patio awning, so compact models are the usual answer. They project far enough to shade a table and chairs without overwhelming the space, and the cassette sits neatly against the wall or ceiling when retracted. The arms hold the fabric under tension, which matters at height where a loose fabric would flap. The survey measures the usable width and depth carefully, because on a balcony a few centimetres either way changes what will fit.

Fixing at height

Where the awning fixes depends on the balcony: the wall behind, the soffit above, or sometimes the structure of the balcony itself. Each option has to carry the load of the awning and the wind acting on it, so the survey establishes what the building offers before a fixing method is chosen. Installation at height is planned properly, with safe access arranged as part of the job rather than improvised on the day.

Wind comes first on an upper floor

Wind strengthens with height, and a balcony that feels calm can gust sharply. That shapes the advice: a compact, tensioned awning rather than a large projecting one, and a firm habit of retracting it when you go in. Electric operation with a wind sensor takes the decision out of your hands by retracting the awning automatically when conditions pick up. Honest sizing for the exposure is what keeps an awning working year after year.

Privacy as well as shade

On an overlooked balcony, an awning does two jobs. Extended overhead, it blocks the view from the windows above; add a side screen and the open side of the balcony is sheltered too. The combination can turn a balcony you rarely use into the most comfortable seat in the flat. Fabric choice plays a part: there are hundreds of colours, and darker fabrics are easier to see through while lighter ones reflect more heat.

Check the paperwork before the product

Flats and maisonettes usually come with a lease or management agreement, and many require consent from the freeholder or managing agent before anything is fixed to the exterior. Sorting that first avoids choosing an awning that the building will not allow. We can supply product details, sizes and photographs of the style to support your request, and the survey can follow once consent is in place.

Tell us about your balcony

Send a photograph of the balcony showing the wall, the doors and the balustrade, with rough width and depth measurements. Tell us which floor you are on, which direction the balcony faces, and whether you already have consent from the freeholder or managing agent. We offer a free survey and quotation, with installation carried out by our own fitters. Call 0114 312 3771 to discuss what would suit your balcony.

Frequently asked questions

Can an awning be fitted to a balcony?
Usually yes, provided there is a sound wall, ceiling or balustrade structure to fix to and the balcony is large enough for the projection. The survey checks the fixing options and how the awning will operate in the available space.
Do I need permission for a balcony awning?
Flats and maisonettes often have a freeholder, managing agent or residents' association whose consent is needed before fixing anything to the building. Check your lease or agreement first; we can provide product details to support the conversation.
What affects the cost?
The width and projection, the fabric, manual or electric operation, and the fixing arrangement all shape the specification. Access at height can also influence how the installation is planned.
Are balcony awnings safe in wind up high?
Upper floors are more exposed, so a compact awning with arms that hold the fabric under tension is the usual choice, and it should be retracted in strong wind. Electric operation with a wind sensor can retract it automatically.
Can an awning give privacy as well as shade?
Yes. An extended awning blocks the view down from windows above, and a matching side screen can shield the open side of the balcony. The survey can cover both at once.
